So you want to have a romantic date with your sweetie. Kansas City has so many options for fun outings whether you are on a first date or have been married for years.
Third Thursdays at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art
Every third Thursday from 6-9 bring your special someone and enjoy live music, special art activities, appetizers and full bar. It doesn’t happen to be a third Thursday? No problem. The museum is open late both Thursday and Friday and on Fridays the gorgeous Rozelle restaurant in the museum is open. The food and wine is excellent and when you finish explore the grounds hand in hand in the moonlight. Remember the museum is FREE!
Kansas City has a plethora of wineries to discover! From Belvoir in Liberty, Stonehous Farms in Grain Valley, Jowler Creek in Platte City, Pirtle in Weston, Fence Stile Winery in Excelsior Springs, Stone Pillar in Olathe to Amigoni Urban in the West Bottoms. Sit and relax while you sample wines on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon or Friday night before dinner. Take a bottle or two home with you!
Paint and Wine Class
This is a great place for a girls night out as well! Take some of your favorite wine and snacks and leave your inhibitions behind. You don’t have to be an acclaimed artist to have fun and produce a nice piece of artwork. Even if you have never touched a brush to canvas, the instructor will take you step by step through the process and you will be surprised how well you can paint. The more wine you drink, the better it looks! Some places include Pinot’s Palette, Tipsy Red Fox, and the Hook Gallery.
Topcade/Screenland/Updown in Crossroads
For younger couples, or older ones that want to be nostalgic, go to the Crossroads for some games at Topcade. Five dollars will get you unlimited time with over 50 arcade games from the 80’s and 90’s. After, check out a cult movie at Screenland. Updown, another arcade with games for 50 cents each boasts over 50 beers on tab and 80’s & 90’s specialty cocktails.
Nothing says romance like a horse and carriage ride and you don’t have to go to Venice to get a gondola ride! You and your date can do both, on the Plaza! After you have a nice dinner, catch a ride with the several carriages during the summer months – they usually run around $55 per couple depending on the type of carriage. The gondola rides, along Brush Creek, start at $55 and go up from there and according the gondolier, it’s a “small slice of heaven.” Try and do them when it’s getting darker, it just makes it all the more romantic!
After Dinner Drinks
You’ve enjoyed a nice dinner or a movie but you’re not ready to go home, how about a cozy place for a cocktail? There are so many to choose from and you can’t go wrong with anywhere in the Crossroads, where they may have a band playing for free, but try some of these little gems as well. A darling little champagne bar in Westport called Ca Va, is a must try for couples, along with Manifesto in the Rieger Hotel, Rosso in the Hotel Sorrello, Julep in Westport and Piropos just north of the river in Briarcliff. Of course this is just a short list of all the incredible places to go for drinks and bites.
